Focus on the Sunday School is a weekly article written by our Pastor to encourage Sunday School Teachers. A few articles are written specifically for our teachers, but most could be used in any church setting. We hope they are an encouragement to all who love and teach God’s Word.

As the Sunday School Grows, So Grows the Church
I remember when I was a varsity wrestler in high school as a sophomore. The coach told me to try and control the opponent’s head. “As the head goes, so goes the body,” he would say. He was teaching me that once one part of the body is going a certain direction, the rest of the body would follow. I never was a gifted wrestler, but I did discovered that my coach had some important things to say—usually too late! I earned my name “Canvas-Back Frasure.”
The wrestling principle my high school coach taught me has a connection to Sunday School work as well. I’ve discovered that as the Sunday School goes, so goes the church. There are many dynamics to church growth, but in my experience and study it is clear that when the Sunday School grows, so does every other significant area of church ministry. When Sunday School enrollment and attendance increase, the worship attendance increases. The offerings, salvations and baptisms also increase when Sunday School grows.
As a Sunday School leader, one of your concerns should be to see your class grow, not only spiritually, but also numerically. If your class could grow by 20% a year, it could double in five years or less. That means a class of 10 in average attendance would grow to 12 in attendance. If each class grew like that, our average worship attendance would rise to nearly 500 by 2015!
